Memphis is the largest city along the Mississippi River and boasts a rich, eclectic history. Memphis was founded in 1819 by several wealthy Americans, including judge John Overton and future president Andrew Jackson. In 1861, Memphis seceded from the Union for a brief time, becoming a Confederate stronghold. Just one year later, in June of 1862, the Union recaptured the city, and Memphis remained occupied by the Union Army for the duration of the Civil War.

Today, Memphis might be best known as an extraordinary hotbed for Soul, Blues, and Rock ‘n’ Roll artists. Music enthusiasts should add the historic Sun Records music studio (which is now a museum) and the Graceland museum to their list of “must-see” attractions. World renowned musicians like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash all recorded music at Sun Records in the 1950s, while Graceland—Elvis’s famed home—attracts visitors from around the world who hope for a glimpse into the life of the “king” of rock ‘n’ roll.

Outside of being a vibrant musical city, Memphis is also home to museums, an active nightlife, art galleries, hospitality and some seriously delicious Southern fare.  If museums, history, and culture are your thing, you won’t want to miss the National Civil Rights Museum, the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. For those looking to get outdoors, Memphis offers a number of attractions year-round. The Memphis Zoo, Zipline and Aerial Adventure Parks, AutoZone Park and Shelby Farms Park offer something for everyone.

You would also be insane to be in Memphis and not indulge in some of the nation’s best food. You can find finger-licking good BBQ on nearly every corner, but stand-out restaurants include Gus’ World Famous Chicken, Central BBQ, Corky’s BBQ, and Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar.

During basketball season, visitors can stop by FedExForum for a Memphis Grizzlies game. The team, which made Memphis its home in 2001, has made 6 playoff appearances in the last 10 years, including a trip to the Conference Finals in 2013. The Grizzlies organization supports the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with donations through its “Friends of Grizz” program.
